Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Minnesota

My father-in-law passed away and he did not have a joint owner or POD on a few bank accounts totaling $25,000 and a small piece of real estate valued at $5500. Prior to going to probate to get the real estate can a Small Estate Affidavit be used to collect the bank accounts?
