Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Minnesota

ok, i was renting a room from this guy for $100 a month and he kicked me out about two months ago. and said i had like three days to leave, i didn't have anywhere for my stuff so i left it there. i visit him and he says i owe him $450 for various things and that next time i get paid if i give him $100 i can get some of my stuff. later he calls me and says if i don't give him around $240 that i can't get anything of mine, i didn't have that much set aside for him, so i didn't pay. he now refuses to let me get my things , and i was wondering if it is legal for him to do this? can he just keep my stuff? can he charge me extra money without telling me before hand? how do i get my things? should i take him to court?

this question needs to be posted in contracts or someplace else this has nothing to do with probate trusts or estates.
