Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Mississippi

Co-signer Bankruptcy

My grandmother co-signed for me some appliances. She later decided to file bankruptcy on the items without my prior knowledge. I have since found out I too have a bankruptcy on my credit for these items. Is that the law? I did not sign anything and knew nothing about these proceedings. If it is not, what can I do legally to dispute this? Who do I go to?

Re: Co-signer Bankruptcy

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you have the right to dispute the erroneous bankruptcy information on your credit report and the credit bureau must remove the item on your report. Basically, you must send a written dispute to the credit bureau that produced your credit report and the credit bureau has 30 days to verify the information. If they are unable to verify the disputed information, the credit bureau must remove it from your report. In order to initiate this process, you must contact the credit bureau and they will give you the address to which you must send your dispute. If you have any other questions, you may call me at 662-449-3099.
