Legal Question in Family Law in Mississippi

Abusive Step Parent

My children's step mother is extremely verbally abusive. So much so, that this past weekend, their dad has told them they will no longer be visiting. I would like to have this drawn up through the court stating that he will not take them around her at all. Is this possible? And will I have to hire an atty for this, or can I just see the judge?

Re: Abusive Step Parent

It is possible, but it seems that the father has already limited their contact with the step-mother. It seems that the stepmother is driving a wedge between the father and his children which is definitely going to affect the development of the children. Therefore, I recommend you consider taking the children to visit a family therapist. If the therapist recommends continued counseling because of the ongoing problems, file a motion with the court asking for increased child support to pay for counseling necessitated by the children's poor relationship with the stepmother. This will help modify the stepmother's future behavior by serving as punishment for negative behavior and relief from punishment for positive behavior. Additionally, you might consider reaching an agreement with the stepmother for her to participate in the counseling in exchange for your abandonment of the motion.
