My father, who lives in Tennessee, wants to give me a truck without having to pay taxes. And I currently live in Mississippi. Can this be done as a legal sale for only $1.00?

The sale can be for any amount but you will end up being taxed on the fair market (appraised) value of the vehicle as appraised by the uniform appraisal values on hand at all Tax Collector Offices. The amount of the sale does not matter. You will need to pay for a Mississippi tag in order to be able to legally drive it in this State. The money you pay goes to offset the costs of maintaining the highways you will be driving on. You should be taxed in Mississippi if you are going to use Mississippi roads and streets for travel. It cannot be a lot as it is a used vehicle. You may have to pay sales taxes unless you register it in your name and his name jointly and later on transfer it to your name only.
