Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Mississippi

Utilites not in my name, but am being held responsable

I sublet my apartment, and the power was on in that tenants name. I went to have the power changed to my name when the tenant moved. The power co. is trying to force me to pay the previous bill first. My name is nowhere on that account can they legally do this.

NO. Think about it this way. What if the apartment you are moving into wasn't yours? What if you are moving into an apartment in any other place or state. There's no way you could be held responsible for the previous renter's over due bill. Same here, except you own/lease and you sublet. Just because you sublet doesn't make you ultimately responsible.
