Re: coerced into resigning

In Missouri, unless you have a contract of employment, an employer can fire you for any reason or no reason, but not for an unlawful reason. Unlawful reasons include race, creed, color, national origin, gender or pregnancy. In addition, there are limited exceptions for firing in violation of public policy (for example, if your boss fired you because you reported his tax evasion to the feds). If you fall into the area of a protected classification (race, etc., above) you can see the Missouri Human Rights Commission and ask for help. If you were fired because you reported criminal wrongdoing, or threatened to, you should contact an attorney.

If you were fired (or asked to resign) because of some other reason, then the best thing you can do is move on with your life. But do get a service letter from your company so that you know what other employers will be told when the call for references.
