Do creditors have the legal right to call employers

They cannot call your job unless you give them permission to call you there. In most cases, they can only call other family members to get your location information. They cannot identify themselves as a bill collector.

Generally when a bill collector uses this tactic, they are not a legitimate bill collector. They are a "third tier" collector who has bought the debt for pennies on the dollar and is trying every trick in the book to get you to pay.

If you are being harassed you have rights and options. Your best bet is to hire an attorney and let the attorney determine if YOU can sue the debt collector. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act gives you that right in some situations.
