Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Missouri

Fair Credit Reporting

I have checked my credit report several times over the last two years. I recently received a letter from a credit collection agency stating that I owe this huge amount of money from six years ago. When I looked at the last credit report that a mortgage lender printed for me it didn't contain this debt at all. I disputed the debt, they couldn't obtain any documents but they have dates on when this account was opened, closed, and the amount due. My question is do they have the right to make me pay?

Re: Fair Credit Reporting

Dates are not proof. They need a promissory note, credit application, signed credit slips, something that shows that you incurred the debt and that you owe the debt. If you have disputed the debt, and the creditor cannot verify the debt, you do not have to pay, and you should invoke the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act to preclude them from bothering you further. There is some excellent information on the FTC web site.
