polygraph test

A sheriff several county's away wants my daughter to take a polygraph test ''to clear her name'' for a string of thefts. They wont tell us when the thefts took place or why they think its her. Is this legal?

Your daughter should decline to take any polygraph tests. If the police have enough evidence to arrest her and charge her with committing any crime, they will do so. If they don't have the evidence, they may still arrest her but she can defend the charges. She can only provide them with additional information to use against her by cooperating with them. She can not in any way "clear her name" or do herself any good whatsoever by talking with them or going through a polygraph. Please do everything you can to convince her not to make any statements whatsoever to any law enforcement authority. She has an absolute Constitutional right to remain silent and she should exercise that right.
