Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

Filling for divorce while living in Florida

A person was married in Missouri but has moved to Florida while husband still resides in Missouri. She wants to file for divorce. Does she need to go back to Missouri to file or can she file here in Florida? I am public notary who will be handling any of the Florida paperwork. Need to get hold of any written information on how she needs to file.

Re: Filling for divorce while living in Florida

Everywhere I've been, in this country at least, we are called notary publics, not public notaries. Perhaps this is just a different custom in your area. I am an attorney and your post really bothers me. It certainly appears as if you are either already or dangerously close to practicing law without a license. The function of a notary public is to verify the identity of someone signing a document and then to notarize that person's signature thus certifying that the person is who he or she claims to be. The function of a notary public is not to "handle the papers" involved with another person's divorce. You may have the right to represent yourself in a court of law, but you have absolutely no right to represent someone else unless you have been licensed to do so. I feel so strongly about this that I will attempt to bring this matter to the attention of list administrator and other authorities. You can cause a great deal of harm if you are "handling" the legal affairs of other people without the training or licensing to do so.
