Legal Question in Family Law in Missouri

Pro Se Paternity Filings in Missouri

Please help me. I am wantin to file a paternity case against the father of my child pro se. I can not afford an attorney (of course he has one waiting in the wings as he ran out and left me with all the bills) and I do not receive welfare or want the state to do it for me. I called my local courthouse yesterday (Cass County) expecting it to be a simple process. They told me that yes I can file the case for $107 but that they cannot provide me with any of the paperwork necessary as they do not have attorneys on hand to help! Does anyone know where I can obtain the appropriate paperwork package?

I am not aware of any law firm or service that offers forms for what you are wanting to do as each paternity case is unique and requires individualized documents. Given your financial situation I would suggest contacting Legal Aid of Western Missouri at (816) 474-6750 to see if they can assist you. If that doesn't work out, you could visit the law library at UMKC to research what documents are necessary to file a paternity action on your own, but it may difficult to do so unless you have some legal training. Good luck.
