Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Missouri

i was with a man for a year and a half. about 8 months ago he gave me a ring of substantial value . we are now broke up and he wants the ring back. what are my legal obligations. i live in kc mo

The term "gave" is very improtant in your scenario. If it was an engagement ring, you may be forced to return the ring or pay him the value. A piece of jewelry tha tis menat to symbolize an upcoming event (marriage) is no longer the property of the recipient when that event is cancelled. If it was just a birthday or Christmas present, you can probably keep it. But, if you two purchased it together, you may be liable to him for anything he paid beyond 50% of the cost.
