Legal Question in Health Care Law in Missouri

Health Insurance and Breast Cancer Survivor

In 2001, my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The treatment was so harsh she took an extended leave of about 16 months from work without pay. Now a year later the owner of a now collapsing business says she owes him for back paid health insurance from when she first went on leave. The insurance company says he is wrong and that he is required to cover her for up to 18 months, since she was a fll time salaried employee. My mother has paid him to keep him off her back. Legally, what can we do? Is there some sort of legal aide here in St. Louis for Breast Cancer survivors?

Re: Health Insurance and Breast Cancer Survivor

The company is required to provide the coverage through its plan, but is not required to fund the premiums. It can pass the premiums on to the employee after a certain time (usually sixty days).

You can call the St. Louis University School of Law. They have a Health Law Program and if you ask to speak to someone in the Health Law clinic they may be able to direct you to some free legal assistance in this area.
