Yes, you can terminate your employment of the attorney. You should do so in writing and request that he turn over your file to you so that you can take it to another attornery. The first attorney may be entitled to some compensation for his time and effort on your behalf., but he can not withhold your file. The division of attorney's fees is usually worked out between the two attorneys.

If you have a written contract, and you should, then the terms of the contract should control.
