i loaned my car to my daughter and she let her roomate drive it. He totaled the car which had no insurance

who is liable??

Definately, the roomate, and perhaps another driver (if the roomate was not at fault) are liable for the damages to the vehicle. You can sue either or both of them. If your daughter is not on your insurance, then she may be liable to you too. If the person at fault is nto insured, you can ask the state to suspend their driver's license unitl they either pay for the damge or make suitable arrangments with you.

If the other driver is not insured, you might be able to collect through the uninsured motorist portion of your insurance policy. But, since your daughter allowed the uninsured roomate to use the vehicle, you might be barred from using that coverage as to the roomate.
