Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Missouri

Apartment lease expiration terms

In Missouri if your apartment lease specifically states automatic renewal after the 1st term are you legally bound for another year or can you lease on a month to month basis as long as you did provide the landlord with notice that you not wish to extend your lease.

Re: Apartment lease expiration terms

If the Notice is sufficient, the parties can alter their lease agreement. Whether the Notice was sufficient is determined by the wording of the lease agreement and applicable law. You did not provide any information to determine if the Notice you gave or are proposing is sufficient.

Don't hesitate to let me know if I can help you in the future.

Good Luck,

Re: Apartment lease expiration terms

Since you indicated that the lease contains an automatic renewal clause, the lease should also contain language describing when and in what manner the tenant needs to inform the landlord of the tenant's intention to not renew the lease. Assuming that you properly notified the landlord in accordance with the terms of the lease, then you are likely living at the apartment under a month-to-month lease. However, I could not give you a definitive answer to your question without reviewing the lease itself. If you need further assistance feel free to give me a call. I work with many landlords in Kansas City. Best of luck.
