Re: Are tax returns public record?

Tax returns are not public records. They are actually protected by law and in many cases (for instance, under federal law) it is a crime to disclose tax return information for any reason other than specific and limited exceptions.

Re: Are tax returns public record?

It depends on what type of tax return you are looking for and what interest you have in the return.

The general rule for federal income tax returns is "no," unless it is your individual return. However, most non-profit tax returns can be found online; you may be able to gain access to any partnership, S corp, and possibly C corps that you have an interest in; and you may even be able to gain access to trust and/or estate tax returns.

Hope that helps.
