how serious is it to marry somebody that is already married? Can the other person go to jail or do any time for bigamy?how long

In the 30 years I've practiced family law, I have never heard of a prosecution for bigamy, although there are some very old cases indicating it was once prosecuted, and the laws are still on the books. The only person with any concern is the already-married person, not the "second spouse" who is never in fact ever married to the first person who has a current husband or wife still living.
