Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Nevada

Vacation Home Rental-Possible Fraud

Some friends and I rented a vacation cabin for New Year's Eve 2000. We found the home listed in the local newspaper, responded to the ad, signed a written contract for three nights and sent a security deposit in the form of a check for $300. The lessor's name was implicated in a seperate banking fraud, which led us to believe that the cabin might also be a fraud. The local police in the jurisdiction of the cabin have confirmed that the address does not exist. What should we do next to try and get our security deposit back, and to ensure that this person is not able to take advantage of others? The cabin was supposedly in Nevada, but we are in California, and the deposit was sent to an address in California.

Contact the district attorney of the county in which the post office address is located. If that does not work then contact the postal inspector regarding mail fraud. You could also sue him for fraud, however, there is a question about the ability to collect a judgment.
