Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Nevada

Hello:

Thank you for answering my question!

I am compiling a book of quotes from a famous rock and roll band, taken from hundreds of sources over the last 30+ years: magazine interviews, radio interviews, newspaper articles, etc., etc. I only plan on using short quotes and indend to cite all my sources; however, am I also required to get written pernission for the use of each and every quote? (There will likely be 1,000s.)

Thanks again for your consideration--

Brett

Yes, you are required to get permission from each source (each copyright owner).

While in school or creating scholarly papers, you are allowed to use small quotes and cite to the source. However, the major distinction is that type of use is non-commercial and educational; conversely, here, you are talking about selling your book containing the quotes, which is a whole different ball game. You cannot avoid the need for permission from each source simply by giving proper attribution to the author (i.e. citation).
