how do I collect on a death insurance when im not listed as the beneficiary

Unless there are some very important facts you are not revealing, you cannot. The insurance company is obligated by contract with the owner of the policy to pay the death benefits out to the named beneficiary. If you are not that person, you have no claim on the proceeds, unless there are some peculiar circumstances like the beneficiary has also died, was the one who caused the death of the decedent, or something else that is quite unusual.
