Legal Question in Family Law in New Hampshire

child custody

My sister is having serious personal problems and may even be going to jail. I have her two kids right now ages 2 and 3, with a note signed be her saying she would like me to take care of her kids until she has her life in order. I dont have alot of money and would like to take care of these two kids and am the only family member willing to do so. I need health care and services for these children. How can I make this legal, or is the signed note by my sister and her life time partner, myself and another family member all I need.

Re: child custody

Depending upon your level of comfort hadnling legal documents, you should go to the local Family Division or court in your area which handles guardianships of minors. I suggest that a temporary guardianship would be appropriate. If you have no money to hire an attorney, you may qualify under certain programs provided by the New Hampshire Bar Association for a free or reduced cost attorney.
