Legal Question in Civil Litigation in New Hampshire

Privacy

My aunt placed a bag of trash into a dumpster at a privately owned camp ground. A person who is employed by the camp ground went through the garbage from the dumpster, found the a piece of paper with legal information on it, and was then questioning others about the document. My question is, is it illegal to go into a dumpster not owned by you, and open a closed bag of trash?

Thanks.

Re: Privacy

Trash is property which has been abandoned. Once abandoned, the original owner of the property gives up the right to claim a privacy interest. The owner of the dumpster most likely doesn't care who goes through it, so long as they don't leave a mess outside the dumpster (it's called "dumpster diving," or at least that's what students called it when I was in college). Lesson: If you want to keep your legal affairs to yourself, bring a shredder to the campground, or at least use the documents as kindling for your fire.
