Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Hampshire

I rented an apartment for several years. The last year I was there the house sold to new owners. My year lease had expired before that happened and I was not given a new lease to sign. I need to know if the new or former landlord is responsible for giving me my security deposit back. Neither has contacted me and I have not received anything back after 30+ days. I want to make sure it's the new landlords I should be filing suit against. Please help me better understand the process.

RSA 540-A provides for attorneys fees to be PAID BY THE DEFENDANT in certain circumstances. Therefore, you should consult with an attorney on this before you file anything. Unfortunately, we hear from many folks who have already filed and lost. At that point, we cannot really help the in reliance on the "fee shifting" provisions of the law since that ship has sailed, so to speak. It is important for you to speak to an attorney. We routinely review these types of cases, at no cost or obligation, to see if we can assist under the fee shifting provisions, at no cost to the consumer.
