Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in New Hampshire

estates

A dear friend of my husband's and mine died in Jan. He left his house and contents to us. He left his stock account to his step-daughters. The will has not been settled yet therefore the house is not ours yet. Who is responsible for the bills until everything is settled? (electric, taxes and insurance).

Re: estates

I can not provide a firm response without seeing the will and knowing the scope of the estate. The general rule is that real estate passes as of date of death, but is subject to divestiture in the event the estate has insufficient assets to satsify debts and claims of creditors. In most cases, but not all, the bills become the responsibility of the person inheriting as of the deate of death. The Executor has certain duties to preserve the assets and protect them from harm. You also don't mention if the house is occupied or not. I would urge that you hire an attorney to review the matter and advise you with more detail.
