Legal Question in Administrative Law in New Jersey

Employment Issues

I work for a non-unionize company, that does not allowed employees to take a day off (when requested) to handles school issues (registration). Is it legal for them to denied a day off to handle important school issues? I work an all day shift by the time I get out school is closed. The only way to take care of business is taking a day off.

Thank you for help.

Re: Employment Issues

New Jersey is an employment at will state, and as such, absent an employment contract, an employer can terminate an employee without a reason. If your employer requires use of vacation days or unpaid leave to conduct non-work related business, even if it for school matters, that is not illegal. Even most union jobs require that employees use personal time days to conduct personal business.

You have options available; you could grant someone power of attorney to handle school registration for you.
