Legal Question in Constitutional Law in New Jersey

Cops lying to suspects

Is a cop allowed to lie to a suspect

about the penalties of a crime to

make him more likely to cooperate?

(i.e.: penalties for underage

drinking ''a slap on the wrist'' when

in reality they are $500 fine and 6

month license suspension)

Yes. Besides, what constitutes a "slap on the wrist" is a matter of opinion, not fact. (It doesn't mean that you will literally get your wrist slapped as punishment. Instead, it means that the punishment is not serious.) The penalty you describe sounds pretty modest to me. That you feel differently does not mean the officer lied to you.
