Legal Question in Construction Law in New Jersey

2002 I hired a contractor to build an addition for my elderly parents. At the time my main concern was my parents well-being therefore did not check his credentials. Unfortunately it turned into a night mare continuing to this day. Finding out after the fact no licensed electrician or plumber did the necessary work, all baseboards have fallen off and need repair, there is no sheet-rock on the bathroom walls which are rotten and need repair, the vanity has fallen apart, all windows cranks are broken, baseboard heating has burned telephone wires, receding lights are misplaced and have burned the ceiling, that is just a few problems that started shortly after completion. His work ethnic along with the men he hired was less than desirable, then drank the entire day to the point of one falling off the roof. Initially he quoted a price $30,000.00 however the final bill was greater than $55,000.00 for a 15x20 room. When asked for an itemized bill, he couldn't produce one. I contacted the attorney handling my parents affair and was awarded $11,000.00, since they felt bad for him. I checked contractors license however did not see his name. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You have not provided enough information to help. I am not sure what you mean by contacted the attorney handling my parents affair and was awarded $11,000.00." If this was a judgment or a settlement, you probably have no other civil remedy because a judgment and a properly-drafted release agreement would cut off additional claims. However, I think that you should know that if there was a payment made to you. Under the circumstances, the $11,000 does not seem as if it should settle the matter. So, I sense that there is missing information. Call if you like.
