Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Back in November of 2010 I lent my (now ex) boyfriend $4,600 to pay off his credit card debt. We broke up the following year in June, I've asked him several times for the money back and he refuses to pay me. He claims because I "cheated" on him he's not paying me back. I do not have a written agreement. The only proof I have is the transaction dates I took out the money from my savings and his Amex statement paying the amount. How do I go about getting the money back! It's been about a year since I last asked for it. Everytime I ask he declines and the conversation turns ugly. Is this good enough to go to court with?
