Whenever you "make a deal" to settle a debt, the deal should be reduced to writing before any payment is made. As to a collection company that won't take no for an answer, give them F-D-C-P-A for an answer. If it were me, I would stop payment on the check unless and until the first company gave me a written release of the full claim. If you don't get that, you will continue to hear from these other guys forever.
