Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

credit card debt

I have little over $5,000 in credit card debt. A few days ago a guy comes to my house stating that he is from sheriffs dept. He had no badge and did not provide his name. I got really scared and contacted collection agency that paper provided. Can collection do that?

Re: credit card debt

HEAR ME !!! SOME collection companies are legit and do things the right way, but being nice does not get people off their wallets, so MANY of them are lying, discusting, unscrupulous, walking piles-o-crap. Do NOT trust them, make them put EVERYTHING in writing, if you can, record their calls to you (in NJ only 1 individual party to a conversation has to consent to record a conversation - companies have to tell you are or may record). Some collection agencies lie lie lie, and have said they are the pollice/sheriff, so, if they are legit, they will have proof of identification, and will NOT hesitate to tell you. Next time, if htey will not give you ID, tell them to wait, you will get your check book, then take their picture with your camwera or cell phone, and call the police.
