i have a debt with a law office. they sent an email saying that if i paid half they would close the account. can i trust that it will close the account

If you get this in writing signed by the attorney's office on their letterhead, I would trust that they will close the account. If they do not and somewhere down the line attempt to collect it, showing them a copy of the letter they sent should take care of this. Most people do not understand that an attorney is bound to honor his or her agreements by being an officer of the court whose acts must be ethical and comply with the Rules of Professional Responsibility. Still, you should always get something in writing so that you have proof of the agreement to show other persons.
