Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Juvenile conviction for misdemeanor-burglary

I was convicted of b&e when i was 18 yrs. Old in new jersey. I was sent to a reformatiory. I was tried as a juvenile. Now, in florida they are denying me a concealed weapons carrying permit based on that conviction. Is it allowed to use juvenile convictions against me at this late date (42 years later)? Also, in new jersey it was called a misdemeanor charge but florida is calling it a felony. Is that allowed?

Re: Juvenile conviction for misdemeanor-burglary

Yes I beleive its allowed. A burglary at age 18 would be considered an adult felony in Florida. it is common for jurisdictions to differ on classification for certain offenses. I would suggest you try to seal or expunge your "juvenile" record in New York and then reapply for your permit. Thank you for your question, Valerie Masters

Re: Juvenile conviction for misdemeanor-burglary

Since my mother happens to live in Florida, I'm more than happy that an ex-burglar is not being allowed to carry a concealed weapon there.

O.K., O.K., it was 42 years ago, and now you've reformed--you're a good person, law-abiding, etc.

I assume you must have some good reason for needing to carry a concealed weapon. You can explain this to the Florida lawyer that you should immediately go out and hire, and he/she can help you appeal the decision and try to get you just as many deadly weapons as your little heart desires.
