Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Theft by Deception

I am currently scheduled to appear in court on a Theft by Deception charge. The amount in question is $500. Is this considered 4th degree in NJ? and is there anyway that i can fight the case effectively without private council?

Yes, you are looking at felony charges and it may be pretty difficult to fight this case without getting an attorney. Otherwise, we would all be out of business right?

Re: Theft by Deception

This is a fourth degree crime. You are facing potential penalties of thousands of dollars in fines and up to 18 months in state prison. You can use the public defender's office - public defender's are licensed attorneys. You can also hire a private attorney if your income is too high to qualify for the public defender. I would NEVER recommend that you go to court on a criminal charge without an attorney. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
