Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

My wife was seeing a doctor for 8 months. Back in Nov 10, we went to see the doc and she told us she was under investigation by the medical board and they wanted her (the doc) the leave the state and stop practicing there. The doc asked us to write letters on her behalf to the medical board. We refused because she wanted us to lie. The doc got a phone call while we were in her office and she started bickering with someone about a letter she paid for and it came out bad. While she was on the phone she wrote my wife two scripts for the same thing. My wife told her this and she took one back, scribbled it out and wrote her medication on it. My wife brought this to her attention and she said if my wife had a problem at the pharmacy to just have them call her and she will take care of it. When we went to the pharmacy the pharmacist saw the scribles and said she could not fill it. My wife said to call the doc and sge wiill verify that the mess up was the docs doing. Instead of the doc saying she messed it up she said she never wrote it. Long story short my wife has been arrested for Presription fraud and rying to obtain a dangeroud controlled substance she has taken for 2 years. The filed two felony charges against my wife. We just got a letter in the mail that they will drop one charge if she pleads to the other for probation and up to 180 days in jail. My wife will not take any deal because she did nothing wrong. We can not afford a paid attorney and got stuck with a bum public deffender. All he wants is for my wife to take the probation and plead guilty. It is crazy because they have no evidence at all. Just the doctors word against my wifes. Mind you this doctor was thrown out of the state because she did something wrong. We can not find because it is not public record. We have tried to call the medical examiners office to find out why she was under investigation, but they keep saying it is not public record. My wife is scared to death because if she does get convicted then its a drug charge on her record and she will not be able to get help with college funds. Any advice will help.
