Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

Partner Moving out with car leased in my name

My domestic partner has a history of poor credit, so when he decided to lease a new car last year, he did not qualify for the financing and the lease was created in my name. Likewise, the auto insurance is also in my name.

We have decided to terminate our relationship and he will be moving out within the next few months. He intends to keep the car and continue to make the monthly lease and insurance payments.

Am I subjecting myself to legal issues if I allow him to do this? Is there some alternate solution?

I don't want this coming back to haunt me. The lease doesn't expire until Jan 2006.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Partner Moving out with car leased in my name

You are exposed liability for his parking tickets under your lease agreement; being sued as a consequence of any accident he is involved in; personal liability if he does not keep the car insurance current and damages the vehicle. Ultimately, you are responsible for the lease and he might ruin your credit. My telephone number is 800 273 7933 if you would care to discuss the problem with me.
