Legal Question in Family Law in New Jersey

My wife and I are no longer together however, neither of us have filed for divorce yet. We have 2 daughters. Our daughters stay with my wife and her boyfriend who is a registered domestic violence offender. I am in between homes but I'm currently seeking an apartment of my own to provide more stability for my girls but in the meantime my female friend has offered to allow me to spend my court appointed time with my daughters at her home. I don't live with my friend but she understands that the girls deserve some consistency. My wife refuses to let my daughters come with me during my scheduled time simply because she doesn't like my friend. My friend has spent time with the girls previously and my daughters like her so it is not like they are in any danger. Can my wife legally keep the girls from me and what can I do to make sure that I am able to see my daughters?
