The text of a written (or digital) work is protected by copyright. This arises automatically as of the moment of creation, but your remedies are much enhanced if you register the work with the US Copyright Office prior to any infringement. So, best practice is to file the application for registration before you give copies of the work to anyone else.

Your description is rather vague, "a book that logs information".

It may be copyrightable and then the prior attorney is correct, you should register it immediately. However, whether copyrightable or not, protecting the idea of the book, the way it "logs information" may require more. Copyright does not protect ideas, nor functional creations.

You may want to consider other avenues as well (confidentiality agreements, protection of idea letters, or even Patent protection)
