is it concidered copright infringement for a student in the united states to use a song in a powerpoint presentation without the artists consent?

I can't tell from the information that you provided. In what country was the work copyrighted? Where is the student's work being published? For what purpose is the song being used? That is, is the student's work an academic work that is about the song or is the use merely entertainment?
