Legal Question in Employment Law in New Jersey

Transitioning from one job to the next

I am leaving one employer and joining another. My current employer has told me that I cannot have a start date at my new job until after my end date at the old job. Can they dictate that and am I bound to tell them my start date? Also, what are the legal implications of being on the payroll of both employers for 2 months or so?

I don't know of any reason why you can't have a start date selected with your new employer. Overlapping employment can be a problem depending on your job function. Additionally, you will need to refer to the terms of any non-competition agreement that you may have with your current employer.
