Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

I currently found out through the code enforcement office when they inspected my apartment it was deemed illegal the landlord said he was registering the apartment and as a landlord this week what kind of action can i take against this matter i have done research and have found if the apartment is deemed illegal you are entitled to 1 months worth of rent times 6. I reside in New Jersey can someone please give me legal advice

You cannot rely on what you think you heard the the code enforcement officer tell you. To qualify for relocation assistance, a tenant must actually receive a notice of eviction based on the illegal occupancy or be otherwise "displaced". Failure to register a rental unit does not create such a right by itself. See N.J.S.A. 2A:18-61.1g and 1h.
