Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New Jersey

So, I was living in an apartment in Montreal, Quebec with two friends. I decided on moving out in April of 2012 and gave my landlord at least 2 months notice. He said alright. My two friends were going to move out as well, but apparently did not give 60 days notice, so our lease renewed. Since then, I have had to find a subletter for my room. This was all fine, until a month ago, when the current subletter told me she was moving out in January. Now, I am without a subletter for January 1st, 2013-July 1st, 2013, and my friends expect me to pay $500/month on top of my current rent at my new apartment. My landlord has said it is my responsibilty to pay, as my name is still on the lease, but when my friends and I asked him for a copy of the lease last year, he would not give one to us, as he said it just automatically renewed. The landlord has promised a lot of things, but not kept his promises, such as fixing the doors, installing laundry machines in the basement, changing the locks on the doors, and fixing the ceiling (it was falling apart), which he eventually fixed, but took him months to do. I have no written proof that I gave notice or was refused the lease, but I am going to try and obtain some soon. If I were to not pay the $500/month, what could potentially happen to me? Will I have to deal with legal ramifications?

If the property is in Montreal, the tenancy is governed by the laws of Canada and the Province of Quebec. You should consult a lawyer who practices there.
