I rent an apartment in rahway nj. My landlord has given me 2 1/2 weeks to leave I recently found out that this apartment is illegal, what can I do?

First thing confirm the apartment is illegal. Call the zoning office in Rahway and confirm the illegality and see if a violation has been issued. If not file a complaint. They will inspect and issue a summons if it is a violation. Under NJ law if the apartment is illegal, you are entitled to 6 months rent as a relocation allowance. Your LL can not get rid of you on 2 1/2 weeks notice. There is a procedure he must follow. He has to give appropriate notice. Evictions must be order by the court and the lock out must be done by a court officer. Self help evictions are illegal and both a criminal and civil violations. If you can show the eviction is illegal before the court issues the warrant of removal the LL must pay the allowence
