Legal Question in Legal Ethics in New Jersey

Can a lawyer in NJ charge his personal fee of $300/hr. for work performed by his secretary under the guies of "preparation" in the agreement when agreement does not call out other time-keepers, i.e. secretary?

What statute, rule and/or case law is applicable?

Thank you

A lawyer can charge his hourly fee for the lawyer's time spent. There may be a fee for time spent by his support staff, but that is not the attorney's time and should be treated separately.

Preparation? of what?

You should look at the written fee agreement with your lawyer. If you do not have one, that is bad. I always have a written agreement with my clients.

Sounds like this should be discussed with the attorney.

Please give me a call to talk it over. The telephone discussion will be free of charge, and I will let you know what I believe I can do to assist you further.
