Legal Question in Personal Injury in New Jersey

Can an intoxicated person defend himself?

Situation: A defendant arrives at small claims court visibly intoxicated, without representation. He is unable to coherently communicate a defense. What options does the judge have? Dismissal? Postponement (then what if he shows up intoxicated again)? Contempt of court?
