Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New Jersey

3 years ago I my brother in law, a contractor, asked me to put a house in my name and he would make the mortgage payments. He planed to knock it down and rebuild it within a year. It has now been almost 3 years and 4 months ago he stopped making the monthly payments. He notified me last week and said that he was going into bankruptcy. Now I either do a short sale, a foreclosure or take over the house. The house is not livable and I do not make enough to cover the payments. If I do a short sale or foreclosure I destroy my very good credit and the chance to buy a house for my family in the next 2 years. Do I have any legal recourse? This is already going to destroy our family. I would appreciate any advise. Thank you
