Legal Question in Tax Law in New Jersey

Internet Ciarettes Sales Back Taxes??

Hi,

Is there any legal way to not pay these taxes or to lower them?

NJ has sent me a bill for over $6,000 for excise and sales tax on Cigarettes purchased over the years on the internet. The site advertised tax-free cigarettes and now this.

How would I find out if excise taxes were already paid in the state the cigarettes came from?

Also the State has the wrong figures on the price of the cigarettes. I paid $10.99 for a carton and they have them listed as $32.99 for each carton.

I tried contacting the internet seller but they don't answer their phone or email.

This is all very confusing to me. I am a 71-year old grandmother.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

PS. Have you heard of any cases in NJ or other states where people have contested these taxes?? And WON?

Re: Internet Ciarettes Sales Back Taxes??

New Jersey is vicious with its attacks on citizens. Unfortunately, each case is too small to fight because the legal fees would exceed the cost of the tax. You may have real arguments and I suggest you consider fighting the Division of Taxation.

I hope this helps!
