Legal Question in Traffic Law in New Jersey

unregistered car

I have 2 cars with expired

registrations/ insurance in my

garage. I am actively working on

both. Garage door was off/open and

the code enforcer wrote me tickets

for abandoned cars on my property.

What law am I breaking if any. I'm in

the boro of Highlands New Jersey

The statute which deals with an abandoned car offense requires that the car be abandoned on private property without the consent of the owner of the property. I assume that you got consent from yourself.

First, get a copy of the ordinance. Second, read it carefully. Typically, the ordinance requires the vehicles be outside, and maybe an eyesore, and may require the vehicle be on someone's property w/o permission. See if the ordinance fits, and even if it does, I might fight it, because you can not tell me I can not have cars as a hobby (thought it may be reasonably limited based upom the space you have etc.). Check to see WHO is authorized to issue summons. Is the person who issued it authorized to do so? Did anyone complain? Who? Do they know the person who issued the summons? At the very least, the issuer sounds like a putz.
