My husband was deemed disabled in 2011. He received a lump sum and monthly social security payments. Does he need to file taxes?

Yes. Social Security income is taxable as ordinary income. The lump sum is taxable only to the extent of the portion which does not represent reimbursement for actual expenses, such as pain and suffering.
